Symphony No. 2
Premiered in 1911, Elgar's second symphony did not enjoy the instant success of the first. It wasn't until Adrian Boult started performing the work that it got the recognition it deserved. Lady Elgar wrote to Boult after one performance: "wonderful performance of the symphony...it seemed absolutely to penetrate the audience's mind & heart..." Elgar himself wrote to Boult that "I feel my reputation in the future is in your safe hands..." The second symphony has now probably caught up with the first in the popularity stakes.
