This brilliant orchestral piece is Elgar's attempt to recapture "the thoughts and sensations of one beautiful afternoon in the Vale of Andora." Including the beautiful central section, "Canto Popolare" (also known as "In Moonlight" the work had its enthusiastically received premiere at a three-day festival of Elgar's music staged at Covent Garden on 14-16 March 1904. It continues to be performed regularly.
