New President for the Elgar Foundation

The Elgar Foundation welcomes its new President.

Following the retirement of Dame Janet Baker CH, DBE, FRSA as President of the Elgar Foundation, Sir Mark Elder CBE was formally confirmed as the new President at the Elgar Foundation AGM in June this year. Dame Janet had been President for a number of years, at first jointly with Wulstan Atkins until his death in 2003, and fully supported the Foundation in its work.

Sir Mark is at present Music Director of the Hallé Orchestra and also works with other symphony orchestras worldwide. The Elgar Foundation is honoured that he agreed to take on the role as President especially as he has shown in his great recent recordings with the Hallé what a true Elgarian he is. In our December 2010 Newsletter Sir Mark said:

"I am really delighted to follow in Dame Janet’s footsteps! Over the last twenty years Elgar’s music has become a profoundly important part of my life. In all his greatest works, there is an emotional force that still speaks to us a hundred years later. I look forward to helping the Foundation continue their vital work."

Sir Mark last visited the Museum in 2009 for the unveiling of the Elgar Statue.
