Elgar 150th Anniversary Appeal

DONATE AN ELGAR!

To mark the 150th Anniversary of one of Britain's finest composers, the Elgar Foundation is launching a nationwide Appeal based on the image of Elgar which is soon to disappear from the £20 note.

All funds raised will go towards securing the future of the Elgar Birthplace Museum at Lower Broadheath, near Worcester; establishing an Elgar performance/scholarship fund for aspiring young musicians; and enabling the Museum to add to its collection of Elgar manuscripts and memorabilia.

In June 1857, Edward Elgar was born in the small cottage at Lower Broadheath which, at his own request, became after his death the place where his memory is treasured. The Museum is home to many of his manuscripts and personal possessions, and welcomes visitors from around the world who enjoy a fascinating insight into the composer's life and music, family and friends, and inspirations.

Despite the Birthplace's thriving activities, its annual income is never enough to meet running costs. It receives no Government financial support and relies on donations, large and small, to make ends meet. This means that its existence for future generations is perpetually at risk.

The original funds to establish the museum were raised by public subscription in 1935. The Elgar Foundation is now appealing to the public again to celebrate the 150th year of Elgar's birth by making a donation to secure the future of the valuable collection under its care.

Chairman of the Elgar Foundation, Peter Ainsworth MP comments:

"It is hard to imagine the memory of a composer of Elgar's standing and popularity being honoured in such a hand to mouth way in any other country. Whilst it is a matter of great regret that the Bank of England has decided to withdraw the Elgar notes from circulation in this, of all, years, there is still the chance to "donate an Elgar" before the remaining notes finally disappear altogether. The composer of "Land of Hope and Glory", the "Enigma Variations" and the Cello Concerto has brought pleasure and inspiration to millions of people over the years. Now is the chance to say "thank you, Sir Edward"."
